Angela Gonzales-Torres Announces Run for Congress in CA-34
Los Angeles, CA — Angela Gonzales-Torres, Advocate for Equity & Justice and Highland Park Neighborhood Councilmember, announced today that she is running for Congress in California’s 34th District. A lifelong organizer with roots in Northeast LA, Gonzales-Torres is launching a community-informed campaign to bring necessary, unapologetic leadership to Washington—leadership that actually delivers for working families, small businesses, and students.
“Our community deserves real representation and respect,” said Gonzales-Torres. “Born and raised in this district, I know we need a representative who will meet us at this moment by showing up, listening, and taking responsible action—not one who continues to sell our neighborhoods out to special interests or solicits millions from them. Jimmy Gomez has had his chance but has let us down. We are in a time that demands urgency and moral clarity—and I’m ready to advocate for our home, the heart of Los Angeles.”
Gonzales-Torres has earned a reputation as a bold leader, joining efforts to empower tenants and youth, fight for immigrant and carceral justice, and protection for educational programs and the environment. As President of the Highland Park Neighborhood Council, she helped put thousands of dollars in grants back into local schools—boosting arts programs, youth services, and mural preservation. She’s worked to reduce recidivism by mentoring formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students, and successfully fought environmental racism by advocating for clean open spaces and halting a toxic warehouse project that would've negatively affected a number of residential areas.
Her campaign platform includes:
Housing For All: Federal rent control, eviction protections, reviewal of Area Median Income (AMI), and expansion of permanent affordable housing.
Environmental Justice: A Green New Deal that prioritizes working-class neighborhoods, healthy schools, and indigenous-led initiatives.
Education Equity: Equitable access to quality public education, including early childhood programs, mental health support, and rehabilitative programs to end mass incarceration.
Universal Healthcare: Medicare for All and community-based health access programs that meet people where they are.
Immigrant Rights: A pathway to citizenship, the end of family separation and detention, and full protections for immigrant workers.
Unlike Gomez, who has taken millions from corporate PACs and corporations, Gonzales-Torres is rejecting all corrupt money and centering her campaign on the power of the people. “This campaign isn’t just about changing a representative—it’s about transforming who government works for,” she said. “We don’t need another career politician. We need true democracy, justice, and peace.”
